Kickboxing: Round 2

Friday, September 8th, 2006

So our second class was last night.  We had a different instructor - Freddie.  As in the Freddie of Freddie Poole Martial Arts.  This was a bad sign.

Freddie began the warm up by handing us each 3 pound dumbbells.  I am a wimp and know that I will soon hate these.  I have never been so happy to do sit ups - cause it meant putting those things down!  We did lots of punching drills on the bags - way more than Tuesday night.  It was also a faster pace, so it was better cardio than Tuesday.  I think Freddie was slightly annoyed with our water and pee breaks.  He must be used to the students who are younger and ask if they can go do that sort of thing first.  We definitely lack in the discipline part of martial arts!

So I think I prefer Ray’s more relaxed teaching style - we definitely had more fun.  But Freddie gave us a better workout and I appreciated that he alternated the legs and arms so we were more balanced out.  It sounds like we will be pretty evenly split between the two instructors, so it should work out fine in the end.

Hopefully I will be done being sore soon.  It hurts to type.

My first kickboxing class

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Recently my friend Lara invited a few of us to take a private kickboxing class series with her at Freddie Poole Martial Arts in Dallas. Seeing as how my recent workout plan involves little more than walking the dogs, I figured this was a great opportunity to jump start my routine. The class is twice per week for an hour for 4 weeks.

I arrived at our first class on time and slightly nervous. Through the giant viewing window you can watch all the small kids beating the crap out of bags and looking otherwise very good at what they were doing. Immediately I felt glad that we were taking a private class with just friends, so we could embarrass ourselves in a friendly atmosphere!

After an initial orientation session regarding nutrition (I hate these things, I try to listen, but all I can think of is ice cream and other yummies), we started to gear up. Literally. The instructor gave me pink wraps and matching pink gloves - I look HOT! He wrapped my hands and instructed on how they were supposed to feel. I can honestly say I won’t be able to do that anytime soon - its pretty complicated. I’m hoping to find some online instructions and do some practicing.

We did a warm up and then went into learning the different types of punches. After learning some combinations, we started a station routine where we each went to one of four stations for one minute, then moved counter clockwise until we had completed all of the stations. After this, we learned some kicks. Then we got to pull it all together and actually kick the instructor! That was fun. Although I’m not really sure I want to actually punch or kick anyone, I enjoyed the class. It was a good muscle workout for me, especially the upper body. I probably need to continue doing some cardio outside of class, but I think I’ll work into that slowly. ;-)
