We’re getting married!
Monday, April 24th, 2006Blake surprised me on Friday night by proposing in front of a couple thousand people at the Frisco Rough Riders game. I was completely surprised, very happy, and embarrassed all at the same time. I believe this is the exact reaction Blake was looking for!
It all started when we decided to attend a game. Blake’s family friend, James Petty, is one of the mascots for this team and we had been saying for awhile that we wanted to make a game before the summer got too busy. So we picked a Friday night and I didn’t really think anything about it. Of course, this was the start of Blake’s master plan.
After watching James ride Thunder (the Rough Riders mascot horse) during the 1st inning, Casey and I headed for our seats in the stands. Blake and Casey’s husband Art would meet us there in a few minutes after they were done visiting with James and taking care of the horse. We watched a couple of innings and chatted for a bit. We watched the Rough Riders coach get into a big fight with the umpire after a bad call and then get kicked out. This was quite exciting for me, as we were sitting close enough to actually see the action! At the end of the 3rd inning, they started a game on the big screen called the “Kiss Cam”. This is where they spotlight two unfortunate souls on the big screen and won’t go away until they kiss. This is pretty funny; I think they pick people who aren’t even together just to see what happens! After a few couples were coerced into a PDA on the big screen, the camera showed up on Blake and I. Not realizing what was going on, I though the camera was on Casey and Art - so I started laughing at them! Blake had to grab me and get me to turn around and kiss him! Then he grabbed my hand, and started to stand up and pull me out into the aisle. I thought he was trying to get me to go throw t-shirts with James, I had no idea what was going on. Then James came running up the steps and handed me a baseball that said, “Kendra, Will You Marry Me? Love, Blake”. Immediately I started crying. Blake got down on his knee (after a small fight with his pocket to get the ring out) and asked me out loud in front of the entire stadium. I said Yes immediately and pulled him up for a big hug. I continued crying of course. Then Blake told me to turn around - that is when I saw a huge mass of people standing in the aisle behind us! Blake had managed to get my parents, my sister Kecia and brother-in-law Kevin, James’ wife Dianne, and our friends Wendy, Rob and Stacy Eppers, John Durrant and Ben and Christina to hide out at the game until the big moment! Apparently after I said yes, the crowd cheered. However, I missed all of this during my state of shock, excitement and embarrassment.
It was the perfect night. Blake did a great job planning and is still running around bragging about how “sneaky” he is. I feel very blessed to have met Blake (big thanks to our friend Kate for introducing us) and have him and his family and friends in my life.
